this is why i cant understand why some are obsessed ONLY the early era !!! to each his own i guess!!

The main reason I prefer pre-82 GD is Jerry, especially his voice. Even though technical things like PAs improve later, Jerry's voice declines, a lot. Also, really sparkling stellar moments don't disappear later, they just get much more rare.

Younger Jerry just has so much energy and life force, older Jerry generally shows the wear and tear of the years and the life force has been diminished by the constant demands placed upon him by the fans. Deadheads were loving him to death. From '69 to '72, the vibe is so fresh and pure. The creativity is brimming constantly.

There are OK audience tapes from all years, they improve a lot in the mid 70s.
Late auds can be spectacular "technically" but the shows are just much more spotty and the feel is very different.
